Mile High Dragons · A game in the dark
The Trial of theTwenty
Five trials. One die. One reroll, if you dare hold it.
A real die, and a
question it answers
Beneath Rovaksole there is a room with a slab in it, and on the slab a die that has been thrown more times than anyone has counted. It is the oldest arrangement in the world: a question you cannot answer by wanting it enough, and twenty faces that will answer it for you.
You get five throws. Each one is a real die with real weight, simulated in three dimensions — you drag, you release, and it goes where you sent it, tumbling across the stone until it stops. Nothing is decided in advance and nothing is nudged in your favour. The number that comes up is the number the die landed on.
At the end you get a card with your five rolls and the fate they add up to, which you are welcome to post, and which the next person is welcome to beat.
Five trials.
Each one worse.
Every trial has a number you have to meet or beat on a d20. The first is kind. The last is not. Here are your odds on a single throw.
- Trial I DC770% chance
- Trial II DC1055% chance
- Trial III DC1340% chance
- Trial IV DC1530% chance
- Trial V DC1815% chance
One reroll. Total.
Not one per trial — one for the whole run. Spend it early to save a bad start, or hold it for the fifth trial and the 15% that decides everything.
You throw it
Drag upward and let go. How hard and where you aim is how it flies. It's a physical die, not a random number wearing a costume.
No take-backs
A failed trial still counts. The fate at the end is how many of the five held, and the die does not care how close you came.
